International Conference “Community-based tourism and sustainable development in a globalized context”


(Adminssion&Media Office Van Lang, 11/04/2019) - Morning 10/4/2019, Van Lang University successfully host international scientific conference with the topic “ Community-based tourism and sustainable development in globalized context”. The conference has the participation of 25  international scientists, researchers and lecturers from different unviersities.

Toursim Faculty of Van Lang University which is the units host the international scientific conference “Community-based tourism and sustainable development in globalized context”. The conference included in the VL-25 series of activities to celebrate 25 years of establishment of Van lang University and subcommittees at the same time run series of scientific seminars “Van Lang University Goes Global) which organized at 3rd campus from 9 to 10 April 2019.

The conference honor welcome 16 international scholars and tourism researcher from national universities, including:

  • Prof. Phillipe Bachimon – Professor in Geo-tourism at Avigon University and Pays de Vaucluse, researchers at ESPACE-DEV laboratory (UMR 228 IRD) and partners at PACTE (UMR 5194).

  • Prof. Chung Hoang Chuong – Vietnamese-US citizens, University of Social Science and Humanities of Ho Chi Minh City.

  • Mr. Nguyen Quy Phuong – Head of Travel Department, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

  • Prof. Bernard Schéou – Perpignan University – France; Professor, the coordinators of the cooperating double degree between Perpignan University and Van Lang University.

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Hoan – Head of Tourism department, Faculty of Tourism, University of Finance-Marketing.

  • Dr. Vo Sang Xuan Lang – Director of Institute for Tourism Development Research, Saigon Technology University.

  • Dr. Nguyen Thi Viet Hung – Lecturers of Vietnam Study, Hong Duc University.

  • Dr. Le Thanh Tung – Lecturers of Culture and Tourism, Hai Phong University

  • Dr. Bui Thi Hieu – Lecturer of Architectural Engineering, Hue University of Science.

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Huy Xu – supervisor of building the international training program of Van Lang University

  • Dr. Dao Ngoc Canh – lecturer of Social Geo-economics, Can Tho University.

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Quoc Thang – Head of Applied Literature department – Vice President of Science, Culture Faculty, Social Science and Humanities University of Ho Chi Minh City.

Giving an opening speech, Mr. Nguye Quy Phuong assert: The problem of doing community-based tourism in Vietnam which is discussed in the scientific research aspect. Now, homestay tourism still have the spontaneous characteristic, yet to have an appropriate organize and practically imply. Due to typical geography, under-developed traffic infrastructure, it prevent community-base tourism from development. More important, when developing the project of community-based tourism that should consider the economic elements, sustainable culture. It is hoped that the conference, scientists have the promotion to support the local development of community-based, it contributes to the tourism development, it improve the community life and conserve the traditional value.

In the beginning, Assoc. Prof. Dr, Nguyen Cong Hoang present “community-based tourism development strategy at Ly Son island in the present context”. The discussion clarifies the problem in developing new tourism product in farm, fishery village; developing extreme tourism product; innovation, development of tourism for married couple whom are going for honeymoon and proceed community festival at Ly Son island. Problem in tourism development at a developing place, tourism in Ly Son island is not yet completely open; the research points out the typical tourism product inventing new tourism product based on local culture which creates the typical characteristics of Middle regions and Vietnam.

The specific research on the potential and problem in developing community-based tourism at local area, discussion of Dr. Le Thanh Tung, Dr. Nguyen Thi Viet Hung, Dr. Bui Phuong Hieu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Huy Xu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Quoc Thang continue discussing about community-based tourism in Thanh Hoa, Huy, hai Phong, and provinces in Cuu Long Delta.

To probe deeper into the discussion, Prof. Benard Schéou with MSc. Researhc fellow. Nguyen Van Chat present “Homestay rather than community-based tourism? The case of Vietnam”. He has done 15 years of research and 9 years of preaching. He show the reason that community-based tourism is, the way to interact with local residents and no-governmental organizations. Homestay is one kind of community-based tourism, not only diversify tourism product but also propose solutions to residents in the heritage zone, which facilitate the friendliness, relationship between tourists and local people, and also the touristic model. The research for practical evaluation on organizing community-based tourism, homestay tourism in Vietnam under the scope of ratiocination, open many problems which need adjusting in practice.

As the co-chair of the conference, Prof. Chung Hoang Chuong present at the conference “island on river: A new tourist destination on the Mekong”. Despite his retirement, he spends time on learning, researching about culture, environment and country life. In the beginning of the speech, he compares the difference between tourists and traveler – one is come as a group, one is an explorer who seek for the outgoing, exploring and experience value. He raises the concern about how to earn the returns of travelers, because most of them are writer, good at interview, who spot new tourism destination. the crucial points of Prof. Chung Hoang Chuong discussion is the love for Mekong river. The love for the alluvial region, professor address the essential elements to develop tourism in this region: for 10 years, tourism in Mekong have not had any change to attract tourist, the curiosity of travelers that conserve the unique culture value, for instance the tender Cuu Long delta girl is the same after years.

dh van lang tieu ban du lich fProf. Chung Hoang Chuong – Vietnamese-US citizen, the experts of non-governmental organization Internatioal Rivers. In 2018, he returned to Vietnam for 6-month research project about Mekong water resources, lives, economy of local people.

In the afternoon session, Prof. Philipe Bachimon present the discussion “Ethnicity and Toursim: integration and marginalization”. He discuss about ethnicity of local area, place he traveled, the lives of ethnic minority, the natural angles and the culture, especially in South Asia and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, India). Professor emphasize the sustainable tourism, which need to define the characteristic of different customer segment to offer a appropriate tourism product and helps them to have a memory, self-experience in the community-based tourism. In fact, tourism can change as  the demand of people but the cultural value remain unchangeably, it requires the agreement to implement sustainable community-based tourism.

The discussion panel of Dr. Nguyen Tan Thanh, MA. Dinh Hieu Nghia, MA. Huynh Hoang Ba, MA. Vu Thu Hien, MA. Truong Thi Kim Thuy discuss about developing community-based tourism, developing local culture of Tra Vinh, Can Tho, An Giang and Khmer ethnic people in Cuu Long delta. Thus, the discussion propose the solutions towards developing sustainable community-based tourism in globalized context.

Vietnam is one of the countries have the ancient culture that is rich in the variety of communities along the countries, so it is the great advantages in developing community-base tourism. The international scientific conference about community-based tourism and sustainable development in the globalized context is the meaniful activities of Van Lang University following the global trend of tourism development. The researches of scholars about community-based tourism, define the development of tourism improve the sustainable community and connecting tourism within national and international community, contribute to the typical views and new about sustainable tourism on Vietnam land having great potential of developing tourism.
