After 320 years of formation and development, Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City used to be known as “The Pearl of The Far East” belonging to Indo-Chinese region for culture, economy, society and unique architecture, East-West urban and typical river area. For decades, the urbanization causes the challenges in environment quality, technical infrastructure – social overload, culture and imported architecture style, the negative transformation of typical urban shape, under the impact of climate change that obscures the original image of the City and hardly identify.

Ahead urban development procedure and 4.0 industrialization, The City soon seizes the opportunity and proactively integrate to the globalization through the allege and especially the approval of project “Building Ho Chi Minh City become the smart City” term 2017-2020, vision to 2025 in November 2017. Furthermore, The City centered the creative urban based on the integration of 3 administrative units ( District 2, 9 and Thu Duc) in years. This could be great opportunity solving the urban problems, growing and accelerating.

To succeed the priceless heritage, from the smart reactions of the ancestor’s creations, the Pearl of the Far East from the past sorting out the potential within the urbanizing Southern City at present; this is the valuable opportunity for the City gradually redefines its position, rebranding the original

Identity, culture of the urban formed by structure, characteristic and its functions; the community reserves and transforms it. Simultaneously developing and integrating global economy to national one, forming national urban’s culture and Ho Chi Minh City has become one of the basic intension of building and developing the advanced culture on the social identity base.

The smart City – Creativity which is the developing trend of other nations all over the world. What is waiting The Smart City brand – Creativity of Ho Chi Minh City  in the coming time?

The program of Van Lang University’s international scientific conference cover the topic Smart Creative City – branding recognition of Ho Chi Minh City: Past – Now – Future, including 02 meeting session and 13 discussion sessions of 10 national specialist and international fellows about the Architecture – Development topic.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo – Director of Tun Tan Cheng Lock Center about Urban architecture and Asian urban at Melaka (Malaysia) and General Editor of JSEAA (Architecture of ASEAN magazine of Architectural Faculty, National University of Singapore).

 He received his first professional degree in Architecture from Parahyangan Catholic University (Bandung, Indonesia, 1984), Master of Architectural Engineering degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium, 1988), and PhD in Architecture from the University of Tokyo (Japan, 1996) in the area of Architectural and Urban History.

He is the founder of mAAN (modern Asian Architecture Network) and iNTA (International Network of Tropical Architecture). He has been serving as a jury member for UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, member of ICOMOS International Scientific Committee and Shared Heritage Committee, founding member and director of ICOMOS National Committee of Singapore.

Dr. Ngo Minh Hung has more than 23 years of experience in researching, practical teaching and project managing in architectural heritage conservation, Architecture and Construction; urban and rural planning; Environment in Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand, simultaneously, participating in government administration, foreign business entities and non-government organization (NGO) in Vietnam. Many specialized writings are published in national and international publications; following others speech and scientific exchange in national wide and international area (USA, Sweden, Belgium Kingdom, Portugal, United Kingdom and France, Japan).
